Department of Soil Management and Rural Development

The Department of Soil Management and Rural Development develops soil cultivation systems, nutrient management options, and soil remediation solutions that enable successful crop cultivation even in extreme agroecological conditions. Their aim is to develop plant cultivation technologies, soil utilization methods and procedures that scientifically establish the sustainable use of agricultural resources, with particular regard to the regional adaptation of a new approach to farming systems that mitigate the physical degradation of the soil, in addition to the development of technology based on the traditional tillage philosophy. The Institute's traditional field of activity is the investigation of issues related to soil reclamation. Advanced and extensive research is being conducted in the fields of soil conditioning, protection against secondary salinization, and mechanical soil improvement, in addition to the effort to apply precision farming principles. Recently. the department is developing product package variations based on the basic principle of micro-conditioning, which can be used on different scales (large farms, small gardens) to improve the soil and meet the nutritional needs of cultivated plants, taking maximum account of local soil properties.

The task of the department is to create and develop a research and presentation background that includes experimental sites, a lysimeter station, experimental and demonstration gardens, R&D tools and other infrastructure that function very well among the ecological, social and economic conditions characteristic of the region. This research background is suitable for multi-level (primarily higher-level BSc, MSc training) practical education and wide-ranging professional consulting, so that it also serves as an educational and experimental base for high-level and doctoral trainings.

Within the Department of Soil Management and Rural Development, the colleagues of the Institute Maintenance Group coordinate administrative and institute maintenance work, and perform administrative tasks.
