Department of Plant Breeding and Variety Maintenance

Plant Breeding and Variety Maintenance

The primary goal of the Plant Breeding and Breed Maintenance Department is to supply the farmers of the Hungary with varieties that are adapted to the heavy textured and saline soils and provide the greatest possible crop security.

The production of varieties that are well adapted to the extreme soil and climate conditions of the region can be grown safely and have good quality parameters is not a new task. The first director of the Institute, dr. Ernő Vezekényi, already stated in 1949: "We should produce new varieties for saline areas, which tolerate the unfavourable soil and weather conditions well, produce larger and safer crops than other varieties, are winter-hardy, more disease-resistant and of excellent quality." Nevertheless, the constantly changing environmental conditions, especially the increase in the frequency of extreme weather and hydrological situations, pose new challenges to researchers engaged in plant breeding. Accordingly, the further goals of the department's research are the preservation of landscape species, the prevention of gene erosion, the breeding of competitive new landscape species, the production of plant species suitable for the utilization of areas withdrawn from production, the development of the technical and infrastructural background related to the preservation and development of biological bases, the investigation of industrial utilization, the widening the utilization possibilities of region-specific species and their use in rural development, all in accordance with the criteria of sustainable plant production.
